FlexDGrid: Advanced Fault Level Management (Birmingham)

Project runs from December 2012 - March 2017

Project Description

FlexDGrid is a £17 million project which will revolutionise the power network in Birmingham. The WPD initiative will use ground-breaking new solutions to accommodate more low carbon generation across the city, reducing power cuts and helping Birmingham reduce its carbon emissions.

Birmingham’s network already provides greener heating to locations such as the Children’s Hospital, the new Central Library and the International Conference Centre among others. However, the connection of low carbon generation directly to urban electricity networks can increase the electrical stress (short circuit currents) that is experienced by the electricity network when faults occur. This is known as ‘fault level’.

In order to overcome fault level issues, over the next four years this project seeks to explore the potential benefits arising from trials of three complementary methods:

Method Alpha

Enhanced Fault Level Assessment - This involves enhancing computer simulation processes to calculate and predict short-circuit currents more accurately.

Method Beta

Real-time Management of fault Level - This monitors the electricity network in a greater level of detail than has happened before.

Method Gamma

Fault Level Mitigation Technologies - This method installs new technologies that can limit the flow of short-circuit currents when faults occur on the electricity network.
